Steph, the founder of Joy Creative Shop, reached out to me in early 2021 for a website redesign. I am a stationery nerd so when I saw her inquiry email, I literally jumped out of my seat!!
Joy Creative Shop is an e-commerce brand specializing in a product line focused on unique, personalized stationery and packaging for life's special occasions. Their goal as a brand is to help people find unique ways to express gratitude throughout the day.
Steph wanted to redirect traffic from their Etsy store to their website. In her initial inquiry, she said, “Our site was not done by a professional (done by me) and kind of half-finished. It isn't a great shopping experience for our customers and not fully representative of our brand”.
The vision for the redesign was to create a website that not only represented their brand, but also create a convenient and great shopping experience for their customers.
“Our site didn’t have a great shopping experience for our customers and did not fully represent our brand. And so we reached out to Chaitra. After working with her I am in love with our new site. It’s look & functionality is amazing and we’ve gotten great feed back from our customers. I feel proud to send people to our store! Chaitra has a great approach to problem solving and the new site has made a substantial impact on our average order value and sales.
I would urge e-commerce businesses to make an investment in themselves and their business. A website is usually the first impression people have of a person or brand. Chaitra, we loved working with you and look forward to continuing in the future! Grateful to have you on our team”
We kicked off with a call to understand the vision, goals, and challenges of the business so we could help Joy Creative Shop achieve their business objectives by mapping out the web strategy.
1. Launching a rebranded e-commerce website:
The goal was to launch a website that is chirpy, colorful, vibrant, and on-brand. Since the website was half-finished and not professionally done, we were looking at some major redesign.
Since there was a functional website in place, we went live with the new one overnight(when traffic is less) to make sure everything works smoothly.
2. Increased sales and repeat customers:
a. Brand identity:
To help increase brand awareness, we brought the brand colors and style to life with the design.
b. User experience:
A great shopping experience is key to referrals and repeat customers. We wanted to encourage users to purchase by making the online store joyful, easy to navigate, and order from with minimal required steps and communication.
c. Increased sales:
To increase sales, we offered bundled product options to increase the average order value.
We wanted to bring out the colorful brand identity through the web design, so we took the brand colors and styles and ran with it. We went with the colorful, bright, vibrant feel of the brand and created the mockups.
1. Design specifics:
The challenge was to arrive at a clean-looking website which was also fun. Some of the design elements that helped us achieve that include:
- Including the bright colors of the brand to make the design pop.
- Colorful icons and illustrations in the design that added a visual story to keep users engaged and make information interesting and easy to absorb.
- Spreading joy by gifting was one of the brand’s and Steph’s goals. So we drove home that idea with illustrations that showed her to be a kind of the Santa on a cycle delivering thoughtful gifts to loved ones, which was used for the email signups section. The footer seal also included this idea of gifting to spread joy.
- The use of whitespace effectively really made the whole design get that clean look even with bright colors and elements without making things cluttered.
2. The use of mega menus in the top navigation help highlight the different categories of product options- there were a lot of them. This works better than traditional drop downs in terms of performance.
3. Personalized products: We implemented personalizations and customizations to products so customers were able to pick colors, names and personalize stationery to their needs.
4. The FAQ page design added to a good user experience by grouping relevant questions under categories together with the use of accordions which save space and show only the required information.
5. The footer covered the navigation links to different pages, highlighted the contact information, and provided an additional reminder to sign-up for email.
As you might already know, Shopify is our go-to platform for product-based businesses. It’s great for developers as well as the business owners to manage and grow. Once we finalized the design, development was fun.
Shopify provides a great marketplace for apps that can be easily integrated with the website to strategically drive growth. Important apps that we integrated with and recommend:
- Instafeed which showcased their instagram feed on the website driving home the brand identity and sense of community
- Bold product options which helped with personalizing the stationery with name, text color, envelope color, return address etc, thereby minimizing the amount of communication required and making purchasing easy. It also allowed us to bundle products together to increase average order value. All these options would reflect nicely in the cart adding to the user experience and keeping them informed of their choices.
- Judge.me reviews app to increase trust with the brand over the long-term
The site was made to be responsive to mobiles, tablets, and desktops to provide the best customer experience across devices.
We added the blog pages, to increase engagement with an option to add and filter posts by categories.
We made a unique tutorial library for Steph with videos on how to manage and customize the new website, how to add new product details, etc so that she would be able to make changes on her own easily.

Since the products sold covered categories from babies to corporates, we had a lot of personalizations to add when it came to products in each category. We designed a general shop page and a personalized shop page to handle this.
